Dashy allows users to create a custom New Tab and Side Panel/Sidebar that fits their unique needs and preferences. The ability to embed websites puts the figurative paintbrush in the user's hand and lets them add, view, and interact with the websites they choose.

How to Create Custom Widgets:

You can create custom widget and custom embedded websites by clicking the + icon in the dock labeled "Add Custom Widget." From here you can create widgets with custom names and icon colors.

To create a custom embedded website, click the Website tab. From here, give your custom embedded site a name, enter the URL for the site, and select if you want it to appear in mobile form.

Once created, the widget will be added to your dashboard and the Websites tab of the widget explorer. To delete a custom widget from the explorer, right-click on its icon and select Remove Widget.

Alternative Method:

If you don't want the + icon in your dock, you can toggle it off from the Settings widget.

If you toggle that option off, you can still add custom widgets and websites through the Widgets Explorer. Click on the Explorer and click the + icon at the lower right and follow the same instructions as above.

If Dashy didn’t already do enough to help you close some tabs, it sure will now with the addition of embedded websites and custom widgets. This massive feature is a true game changer, but using these embedded sites is really quite simple. Let’s take a look at how they can help make your browser more productive, or wildly unproductive if you want to add all of your social media. We won’t judge.

Adding Embedded Websites:

Dashy includes 25+ websites to choose from. if we don’t have something you want, don’t worry, we will cover how to add your own a little further down this post.

To add a website to your dashboard, click on the widget explorer in your Dock. From here you will see the option to switch from Widgets, to Websites. Clicking on Websites will take you to a new list of options that you can embed right into your dashboard. Simply click on the website of your choice, and it will neatly nestle its way into your Dashy.

Resizing and Moving Websites:

Some sites can be viewed from a small window, like Instagram photos or playing some music from YouTube. Others like Reddit may need a larger space for you to be able to view everything you want to. You can organize and resize these widgets easily to fit your needs.

Hover over the right edge of the embedded site and click-drag to the side to expand the widget’s width. Hover over the bottom edge of the site and click-drag downward to expand the widget’s height. Hover over the bottom right corner to expand the widget diagonally.

These embedded sites can be moved and pinned to your dashboard just like any other widget.

Create Custom Widgets:

To add your own website, head to the widget explorer in your Dock and select the + icon at the bottom right. From here, give your custom widget a name, enter the URL for the site, and select from some experimental customization options.

These customization options include displaying the website in its mobile form, and resizing the appearance of the site within the widget.

Once created, the widget will be added to your dashboard and the Websites tab of the widget explorer. To delete a custom widget from the explorer, right-click on its icon and select Remove Widget.

With all of these fantastic options you will be sure to have fun creating the ultimate productivity workspace, or the premier procrastination destination of your dreams. Close some tabs and place all of your favorite apps and websites right into your dashboard and side panel.

Todoist offers a different type of interface from our original To-Do widget that offers a variety of organization options so you can create Projects, Sections, Tasks, and Subtasks. We have launched this To-Do option in its very own Todoist widget that you can integrate with the Todoist account you already have. This means you can access your Todoist lists without having to open a separate extension or tab. Let’s take a look at how the widget works.

Adding the Widget:

Upon adding the Todoist widget from the widget explorer, you will be prompted to connect to your Todoist account and grant Dashy permission to sync with it. Once synced, all of your Projects and Tasks will automatically appear within the widget. If you haven’t used Todoist before, you can start from scratch and create your customized experience in a different manner than our To-Do widget.

Projects:

To add a Project, click the icon at the lower right of the widget and give your Project a label. These projects can be easily cycled between by clicking the drop down menu at the lower left. This allows you to compartmentalize each aspect of your work.

Sections:

To create Sections within each Project, navigate to the Project you want to create a Section for, then click the “Add section” icon at the top right of the widget. Give your Section its own label, then add your Tasks and Subtasks to it.

Once you have created your Sections, they will be sorted into these groups. You can use the second drop down box to cycle between them, or select “All tasks” to show all of your Sections. If you are showing all of your Sections, you can collapse them, add a task to them, or delete the section by hovering over a Section and selecting from the options at the top.

Tasks:

For each individual task you create, you can click on the tasks, label it and provide a description, add up to 4 subtasks, set a due date, and set a Priority rating. Once you check an item off of your list, it will disappear from view. If you prefer to see your completed tasks, you can select the “Show completed tasks” checkbox at the bottom of the widget to see completed tasks with their checkmark and strikethrough.

If you want to have a task recurring daily, you can accomplish this through Todoist directly as it is currently unavailable to create within the widget.

The Translator Dashy widget is powered by Google Translate. It instantly translates text to/from dozens of the world’s most popular languages. The widget can help with all of your translation needs from Arabic to Zulu and everything in between. Let’s take a look at how the widget functions and how it can be useful to you.

How do I use the Translator widget?

Type or copy/paste text into the widget. The widget’s default setting is to auto-detect the language of the added text. Use the drop down menu to scroll through the list of languages to translate to, or click the drop down box and type in the search bar for the language you are looking for.

The Translator widget can translate texts up to 2048 characters in length, which is nearly the size of this article.

Once you’ve received your translation, you can click the copy button next to the drop down menu to quickly grab the entirety of your translated text to paste elsewhere.

Why should I use the Translator widget?

The largest reason is efficiency. There are plenty of translators out there, and even some Chrome extensions for the purpose of translation. However, Dashy provides a way for you to complete translation without opening a New Tab or a separate extension. It can be added to your dashboard or side panel and used along with all of our other widgets simultaneously.

You can translate text, copy and paste it into your notes, into a calendar event description, or whatever you need.

Everyone who needs to use a translator has their own reason. Maybe you want to send an email to your Dutch great-grandmother about the Nederlandse Breidagen (Dutch Knitting Festival). Perhaps you need to send messages to your international work team. You can quickly translate a message into multiple languages so everyone can be on the same page. Whatever your reason, the translator widget is here to help.

We have heard a lot of great feedback, and a lot of constructive feedback since the launch of the Dashy Chrome extension. We love hearing from our community, and we take what you have to say seriously.

We have heard from a few users that they love using the Dashy Side Panel, but don’t necessarily want to be forced into having Dashy as their New Tab page. So we listened.

With our recent update, you now have the ability to set your New Tab page to be whatever you want. You can keep it as Dashy, use the Chrome start page, or set a custom page to launch with your New Tab.

How to change your New Tab page:

With the extension installed, you can customize your startup page in the following ways.

1. Through the Settings widget. Open the widget, navigate to the “Customization” tab, and select from the drop box.
2. Right-click on your pinned Dashy extension icon and select “Options.” You will be brought to a page with a drop box of New Tab options.
3. If you don’t have Dashy pinned (come on, who doesn’t), click the extensions icon, click the three dots icon next to the Dashy extension, and select “Options.” This will take you to the same page as option 2.

Conclusion:

We would love for you to use Dashy as your homepage and New Tab, but if you just want to use the Dashy Side Panel, we get it. We want our users to have a customizable browser that helps them get their work done easier, and we aim to deliver by any means necessary.

Dashy helps consolidate many of the tools you use for work, school, or your time online into a user-friendly side panel and New Tab dashboard. As helpful of a tool as it is, we still have to navigate the web throughout our day. With the amount of places we go online and the amount of tabs we open, we need a better system for organizing and traversing our browser. This is where the Tab Manager steps in to assist.

With the Tab Manager widget added to your side panel or dashboard, you can pin tabs, turn multiple tabs into collapsible groups, color coordinate and label your groups, and much more. Let’s explore how to use the widget.

How to pin a tab:

Your open tabs will all be visible with their corresponding icon within the widget. To pin a widget to the far left of your tab bar, right click on a tab icon and select pin. Alternatively, navigate to the tab you want to pin, and click the pin icon at the bottom of the widget.

Pinning a tab will create a section of the widget labeled Pinned Tabs. You can unpin tabs by, you guessed it, doing the exact opposite process.

How to create a group:

There are a few ways you can do this. We will start with the most efficient and useful method, which is utilizing the Bookmarks widget along with the Tab Manager.

• From the Bookmarks widget, click and drag a folder of tabs to the Tab Manager widget.
• This will open all of the sites in your folder and place them into a group with the same label.
• You can collapse the group by hovering over it and selecting “Collapse group” on the far right.
• Hovering over a group also gives you options to change color, add a tab, open the group in a new browser window, or remove the group.
• You can click and drag other tabs into the group within the widget.

Alternative methods to create a group:

You can also navigate to a tab, then click the folder icon at the bottom of the widget to create a group. From there you can click and drag other tabs into the group and label it. Here is how a browser looks with a few collapsed groups.

Another option for creating groups is to right click on a tab icon inside the widget, and select “Create Group.”

How to change between Grid View and List View:

To toggle between the two display options in the widget, hit the icon at the top right of the widget.

Why you should use the Tab Manager:

The seamless cooperation between the Bookmarks and Tab Manager widgets makes organizing your browser easier than ever. You can start your workday and have your browser set up with a single click and drag. You can quickly collapse your group of tabs shopping for artisanal sweater vests if your boss is walking by. You can easily compartmentalize each work or school tasks you’re currently undertaking.

If you've landed here, you've probably already downloaded the Dashy Side Panel from the Google Chrome web store. It uses a piece of technology that Chrome launched recently, and as such a lot of Chrome users aren’t entirely familiar with how the side panel works. The Dashy extension really transforms the side panel into an extremely powerful tool, but that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know how to use it.

• How to add widgets to your side panel.
• How to minimize widgets.
• How to add and change profiles.
• Ways you can use the Dashy Side Panel for your work.
• A few helpful videos that explore the ways we use Dashy.

How to Add Widgets to Your Dashy Side Panel

Once you have opened the side panel and signed in, there is a brief tutorial showing some of the features of the extension. Our list of widgets is already quite extensive, and we are constantly adding more.

So to add the widgets that you want, take a look at the right hand side of the side panel to see the dock. The dock can be toggled to show up when hovering over it, or to always be visible. At the bottom of the dock you will see an icon to “Add Widgets.” Clicking on this will open the widget explorer where you can view the options and click on a widget to add it to your mini dashboard. Once added, the widgets will appear in your side panel, as well as each widget’s corresponding logo appearing in the dock.

You can rearrange the order of how the widgets appear by clicking and dragging the widget icons in the dock.

• Click on the “Add Widgets” icon at the bottom of the dock.
• Click on the widget you want to add.
• Click and drag the widget icons in the dock to reorder them.

How to Minimize Widgets

If you want a widget to go away for a while, but want quick access again later, then minimizing is the option for you. Right click on the widget itself (not the icon in the dock) and select “Minimize.” This will shut down the widget and move the icon for it to a lower dock menu for quick retrieval. When you want to pull up the widget again, just click on the icon in the minimized widgets dock.

• Right click on a widget.
• Select “Minimize.”
• Quickly retrieve the widget later by clicking the widget icon in the minimized widget dock.

How to Add and Change Profiles

You can have up to three different profiles in Dashy. Maybe you have one for work, one for personal use, and one for your schoolwork. This makes it easy to keep the different aspects of your online life organized and separate.

To create a new profile, open the Settings widget and navigate to the “Profiles” tab (second from the right). Click “Add new profile” and create your new setup.

To swap between profiles, click on your profile icon which is labeled “My Dashy,” or view the My Dashy widget. Click the drop down menu that has your profile name and see your different profiles. Click on the profile you want to switch to and your side panel will instantly switch over.

• Open the Settings widget.
• Navigate to the “Profiles” tab.
• Click “Add new profile.”
• You can swap profiles from this tab as well. OR
• Click on your icon below the dock to open “My Dashy.”
• Click the drop down box that has your profile name.
• Select the profile you want to switch to.

How to Use Dashy Side Panel for Your Work

With all of the productivity and organization widgets we have, there are loads of possibilities of how it can be useful to you.

Many widgets concentrate on providing information that you need to view frequently.

Add the Stocks or Crypto widget and view prices of the ones you care about in real-time.

Add the Weather widget for up to date information on any city in the world.

The News widget can be customized to show headlines from your favorite outlets.

World Clock lets you see what time it is in multiple selected time zones, and this one is particularly important for a team like ours that spans multiple continents and goofy time zones.

The News and Podcasts Dashy widgets offer a growing library of content to choose from, but you may want to add in outlets and content creators that we don’t currently offer. Fear not, we have added the ability to add your own favorites by utilizing RSS feeds. Let’s take a look at how you can use these feeds to further enhance your Dashy widget experience.

Finding RSS Feeds:

The first step is finding the RSS Feed for the outlet or podcast you wish to add. It should be noted that some outlets and podcasts are exclusive and don’t offer these feeds, but many do offer them publicly.

Use the search engine of your choice, and search for the source you’re looking for. For example, let's say you are a diehard LA Lakers fan. You can search “Los Angeles Lakers RSS Feed.” I quickly found the LA Times RSS feeds, navigated to their Lakers’ coverage, and clicked on the feed. It will look something like this:

Importing the RSS Feed:

Now that you have found their feed, copy the entire URL and navigate back to DashApp.com. Open the News widget, click “Add Source,” paste the URL in the box and press “Validate,” then press “Add Source” once it has loaded. Presto! You’ve added the LA Times Laker coverage to your News widget!

Simplified Importing Instructions:

• Search for the RSS feed of the media outlet or podcast of your choice.
• Navigate to the feed itself.
• Copy the URL.
• Open the News or Podcast widget.
• Press “Add Source” or “Add Podcast.”
• Paste the URL into the box.
• Press “Validate.”
• Press “Add Source” at the bottom of the widget.
• Enjoy your coverage!

Now that you have added your preferred outlets and podcasts you can enjoy them from your own custom homepage and dashboard. They will constantly update to provide you with the latest news and content, so you will be able to access the information you care about with ease.

Once you have added all of the widgets you want to use to your Dashy dashboard, there are a number of ways to arrange and configure them to create a customized dashboard experience. Let’s break down the ways this can be done.

Manually Arrange Widgets:

You can move widgets anywhere on your Dashy dashboard by clicking and dragging them where you want them to be. If you want to ensure you don’t accidentally move them from their place, you can hover over a widget and hit the “Pin” icon in the toolbar at the top of the widget.

Simplified Manual Arranging Instructions:

• Click and drag a widget to where you want it to be.
• Pin a widget by clicking the “Pin” icon on a widget’s toolbar.

Automatically Arrange Widgets:

If you want Dashy to do the heavy lifting in organizing your widgets, you can auto-arrange your widgets in a few different ways. Right click anywhere on your dashboard’s background to open the quick-menu. From here, click “Arrange Widgets” to quickly organize your widgets. All non-pinned widgets will be moved to an opening and your dashboard will look nice and neat.

Auto-arranging can also be done using the keyboard shortcut of Command + A, or ⊞ Win + A, or CTRL + A.

Simplified Auto-Arrange Instructions:

• Right click on the background of your dashboard.
• Click “Arrange Widgets.”

OR

• Press Command + A
• Or press ⊞ Win + A
• Or press CTRL + A

Modify Widgets:

You can adjust the appearance and size of your widgets through the Settings widget. The first tab of the Settings widget is “Customization.” From here you can adjust your text color and font, make your widgets more or less transparent, adjust their shape, and use the slider to change their size.

Simplified resizing instructions:

• Open the Settings Widget
• Go to the Customization tab (far left).
• Use the “Size” slider to adjust widget size.

Introduction:

Dashy is filled with customization options, integrated tools and apps, fantastic widgets, all that make your homepage and dashboard efficient. However, with so many options available things can get a little crowded. That’s why profiles are so important and useful. You are able to create a secondary, or even a third Dashy dashboard for the different aspects of your life.

Why have multiple profiles or pages?

An example of how multiple profiles can be effective: You can have a Dashy dashboard for your work, complete with your calendar, time tracker, to-do list, bookmarks, ambience, reminders, or whatever you need. Then you can have a secondary profile for your leisure time that has news, podcasts, music, and other things that make your chill time on the internet a bit less chaotic.

Creating these different profiles provides you with even more customization options for your dashboards, and they can help you be more organized. Let’s take a look at how to create a new profile and page and how you can switch between them easily.

How to create a new profile:

There are three different ways you can create a new profile: the dock, the My Dashy widget, and the Settings widget. From the dock at the bottom of the screen, click on the My Dashy icon and click “Manage Profiles.” This will open up the Settings widget and have it open to the profiles tab.

From here you can select “Add new profile,” choose or import an avatar, name the new profile, enable a PIN if you desire, and press “Create.” This will now take you to your brand new profile which you can customize into a perfect widget dashboard for your homepage needs.

Simplified instructions for creating a new profile:

• Open the Settings widget.
• Navigate to the Profiles tab (second from the right).
• Click "Add new profile."
• Choose an avatar or photo.
• Name your new profile.
• Add a PIN for security if you want to.
• Press "Create."

Switching between profiles:

Now that you have created a new profile, let’s learn how to swap between profiles. Again, you will have the same three options to access profiles. The dock, My Dashy, and Settings. If you click on My Dashy in the dock you will see a dropdown menu where “Manage Profiles” used to be. Click here and you can select which profile you would like to display.

From the Settings widget you can fully manage your different profiles by navigating to the Profiles tab (second from the right). Click on a profile to display it, click the edit icon to adjust profile information, or delete a profile. Each Dashy account can have up to three profiles.

Simplified instructions to switch between profiles:

• Click on My Dashy in the dock at the bottom of your dashboard.
• Use the dropdown menu of profile names.
• Select the profile you want to display

OR

• Open the Settings Widget.
• Navigate to the Profiles tab (second from the right).
• Click on the profile you want to display.
• From here you can edit/delete profiles.
• Check "Remember last used profile" to pick up where you left off next time.
• Uncheck "Remember last used profile" to always start with your main profile.

How it works

Click the dropbox at the upper left of the widget to select what you need to convert. Then use the two drop boxes on the right to scroll through and select the two values you wish to compare. You can type in custom amounts to quickly see the converted length, currency, speed, etc.

Thanks to the Converter widget you will never get caught not knowing your Fahrenheit from your Kelvin again!

About the Podcasts Dashy widget:

Dashy community members now have access to an endless flow of audible chatter, mindless garble, and nerdy jargon with the Podcast widget. Our customization options mean you can always find more content to listen to. Add your favorite podcasts from the included list, or add unlisted podcasts by importing an RSS feed URL (see below).

Navigating the Widget

From the widgets menu, sort through different categories or use the search bar to find podcasts that you're interested in. Hover over them and click "Follow" to add them to your collection of podcasts. Click on a podcast's logo at the top toolbar to see their recent recordings. Click a recording to get the audio flowing.

Removing Podcasts

To remove podcasts from your toolbar, press the plus icon, go to "Following," hover over the podcast you're tired of, and click "Unfollow."

Adding Other Podcasts

Press the plus icon, click "Add Podcast," and insert the URL of any RSS feed. Once you paste the URL, press "Validate" and once loaded, press "Add Source" at the bottom. The podcast will now be available and followed in you Podcast widget. Many podcasts provide RSS feeds for their channels, so if you're looking for something specific make sure to use a search engine to find the RSS feed for the podcasts you want to hear.

The News Dashy widget is a brand new addition to the ever growing pool of widgets available on Dashy. Pin your favorite news outlets and see today's headlines.

About the News Dashy widget:

Members of the Dashy community can add this widget to their dashboard and select the news outlets they want to see headlines from. Once you have selected your media outlets, your News widget will show the most recent stories from those organizations with a scrollable interface. Click on a headline that you’re interested in to expand the headline. The expanded headline will include a snippet from the source, as well as a link to go directly to the full article.

Adding News Sources

Press the plus icon in the top left of the widget to access the list of available media sources. Once pressed, the media menu allows you to filter through the different categories, or you can use the search bar to quickly find the news channel you prefer. Hover over the name and click "Follow" to add an outlet to your News widget feed.

Removing News Sources

To quickly remove a news source that just isn't cutting it, open the media menu by clicking the plus icon, go to "Following," and click "Unfollow" on the outlet that is getting the axe.

Add Your Own Sources

Press the plus icon, click "Add a Source," and insert the URL of any RSS feed. Once you paste the URL, press "Validate" and once loaded, press "Add Source" at the bottom.
